The secret to a successful use of vision as a QC aid is to understand the customer requirements and interpreting these into what is achieved reliably with a vision system.  Typical areas that a vision system is best employed:

  • Part Present: For assembly cells and similar the vision system can ensure that parts are present and correctly assembled.
  • Short Shots: For injection and blow-moulded parts, the last place to fill in the mould can give an incomplete fill or short shot.
  • Neck Deformation: Blow moulded bottles may have a poorly formed neck; the vision system can measure critical parameters and compare against pre-stored data.
  • Print & Decoration Defects: Most products have some decoration, it is critical that this is perfect.  Vision systems can detect a number of defects.
  • Part Orientation: When used in parallel with a robotic system, randomly orientated parts on a conveyor can be picked and orientated by a robot guided by a vision system.

Most plastic moulded parts are self-coloured using masterbatch.  For many reasons, this may alter during a batch of parts (blockages, bin empty etc).  PCE has developed a system that can be programmed via the machine HMI to monitor the colour of each part, with reject for out of specification parts.  The unique properties of the PCE system are:

  • RGB: Each colour is split into the RGB components.
  • Tolerance: The RGB components are displayed on the HMI with their own tolerance fields.
  • Results: After each component the results are displayed on the HMI.
  • Ease of Set-up: The user holds a part in front of the senor, presses the teach mode and sets the tolerances by numerical values.
